In 1700 Vauban had already recommended the construction of three advanced defensive elements. The first half-moon was built between 1728 and 1731, but the other two were never constructed. The building was then modified following orders from General Arçon in 1792 with the addition of a tower connected to the main fort by an underground tunnel.

It is difficult now to imagine what it used to look like: 56 meters long, 12 m wide and 16 m high. Vauban wanted it to be very imposing and modelled it on Saint Louis church in Grenoble. This enormous project was criticized in its time, but presumably it was meant to send a powerful symbol of Catholicism out in a heavily Protestant area.
