Many water fountains in the Hautes-Alpes were built in honor of famous people or as thanks for a generous deed, although there were many more that were simply essential in everyday life. This particular water fountain features a bronze medallion, bearing the effigy of General Albert in honor of his exploits.

This aptly named fountain (Four Corner Fountain) is at the intersection of Rue Catinat and the Rue du Colonel-Cabrie. Built in 1791, it was originally on the grain-measuring site but was moved in 1838. Note the start of the Rue Catinat runnel at its base.

The many water fountains in the village remind us that "Font" means “source” which is where the name “Font Eygliers” comes from. Note the “naïs” near the water fountain: stone basins that are filled with water for retting hemp. Retting is soaking the hemp in water to allow the fibers to separate from the stem.

The naïs is a water tank, lined with clay to seal it, built near a river so that water can easily be diverted to it. 

 The naïs was used to store water for watering gardens, crops, and especially to ret hemp. At Eygliers, a few naïs remain where the hemp was tempered (retted) before being transformed into fibre and woven.

Also called an artillery store, the arsenal is a logistically essential building serving as both warehouse and repair workshop for weapons, it is located near the northeast ramparts in the area of the fort most difficult to access. It is built on two vaulted levels to resist explosions.
